Get Involved
There are a variety of ways to get involved with the Arts Council of the Valley and participate in downtown Harrisonburg. Below we have a few suggestions:
1) First Fridays Downtown/Museum and Gallery Walk: The Arts Council of the Valley leads the First Fridays Downtown initiative for Harrisonburg. On the first Friday of the month (from April-October), local galleries, restaurants, and businesses open their doors to the community from 5-7 p.m. Participants not only enjoy art openings, but also live music, walking tours, wine tastings, and a variety of other cultural activities. In April and October, the Museum & Galley Walk takes place, acting as a bookend for the First Fridays Downtown season. For examples of past First Fridays participants and events, click “Press Room” on the bottom on the homepage. We’d love for you to come out and savor what downtown has to offer!
2) The Smith House: The Arts Council of the Valley hosts monthly art openings at the Smith House, 311 S. Main Street. The opening receptions are the first Friday of the month, free, and open to the public. Refreshments and beverages are provided for the viewers while they enjoy the art. The featured artists frequently attend the openings, welcoming questions and comments from the community. 3) Volunteers at Court Square Theater: Court Square Theater is currently seeking volunteers ready to assist every visitor who walks through the doors. If you love theater, enjoy working with people, or both, this is the perfect opportunity to become involved in one of our region’s best cultural attractions. 4) Local Cultural Events: For a list of upcoming cultural events in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham area, please click the link for “Cultural Events.” If you would like the Arts Council to post your cultural event, please email an event description (including title, location, date, time, and ticket information) to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Approved cultural events will be posted for at least two weeks before the actual date, so send your event information early! Thank you!
